This is an old picture of Micah in a bunny costume.

I don't remember
the first time we took him to the dentist. I think he was six. We
couldn't imagine a dentist putting anything in his mouth without
Micah biting down and not letting go. His tonic bite reflex was very
strong and although he doesn't do it as much as he use to it is
still a problem when giving him pills or when we brush his teeth and
of course when he sees the dentist.
We brushed Micah's teeth
and kept an eye on them but we waited longer than recommend before
taking him to the dentist. The dentist, who specializes in kids with
special needs, which I strongly recommend, said that teeth growth is
related to bone growth.

| Since Micah is small and a very
slow grower, his teeth came in very late and slowly. Now at nine he
has six adult teeth and one coming in. He never had any cavities.
But he did grind his teeth a lot. His front baby teeth were about
half their original length by the time they fell out. Fortunately he
doesn't grind them much now. When he wakes up in the a.m. and
stretches, or if he has something in his mouth he doesn't like he
grinds them a little. Besides brushing them every day for the last 8
years we have used a Nuk teething tool to desensitize the inside of
his mouth. We also use it to help with this gag reflex.
We rub the
insides of his cheeks, the roof, push down on and "walk"
to the back of his tongue and under his tongue with it. We also brush is tongue
from the back to the front. He still doesn't like it, but he lets
us do it. About 50% of the time he doesn't bite down.

| The first
dentist visit was not too bad, but ever since the first time he knows what
is coming and he doesn't like it. We have given him Valium before we
went and the Dr. has used gas to help him relax. ~ Micah's Mom |
