________________________BOTOX__________
Micah has had botox for both legs and arms at different times. We saw
little improvement with his legs... but there is a very marked improvement
to his arms, specifically his ability to reach forward, push a switch at
will and grasp objects presented to him.
What is it?
Botox is a medicine used to decrease tone (rigidity of muscles) or
unwanted spasms in a specific muscles. Derived from botulinum
toxin, botox has been used safely and effectively to treat symptoms of
cerebral palsy when injected directly into the affected muscles or
muscles.
Uses of Botox: Botox may improve a child's range of motion, ease,
in stretching, tolerance to wear braces and developmental gains, e.g.,
crawling, standing or specific gait changes. It is not intended to cure
spasticity.
Benefits: Side effects are rare and minimal. The results are
usually seen with in two weeks.
Maintenance: Effects may last for several months. When the
medicine's effectiveness begins to wear off, the patient's physician
should be consulted to determine the effectiveness of repeating
injections.
